Hallo Salamander,

ich dachte eigentlich, dass ich eine gute Grundbildung zu Esoterik und benachbarten Gebieten in Europa besitze. Dann war ich aber doch überrascht, als ich feststellte, dass es in Europa eine mir völlig unbekannte Sprache gibt, der man nicht nur eine Verbindung zu Zigeunern nachsagt, sondern auch mystische Wurzeln.

„Nus a dhabjon dhuilsha“ heißt wohl „Gott segne dich“ – in Shelta Thari.[1] Klingt eigenartig, ist aber ein Zitat aus einer Sprache, die schon lange in Europa gesprochen wird. Shelta Thari (oder auch Shelta) hat eine eigenartige Geschichte:

Shelta (…)is a language spoken by Rilantu Mincéirí (Irish Travellers), particularly in Ireland and the United Kingdom. It is widely known as the Cant, to its native speakers in Ireland as De Gammon, and to the linguistic community as Shelta. It was often used as a cryptolect to exclude outsiders from comprehending conversations between Travellers (…). The exact number of native speakers is hard to determine (…) but Ethnologue puts the number of speakers at 30,000 in the UK, 6,000 in Ireland, and 50,000 in the US. (…)

Linguistically Shelta is today seen as a mixed language that stems from a community of travelling people in Ireland that was originally predominantly Irish-speaking. (…) The Oxford Companion to the English Language puts it at 2,000–3,000 words.[2]

Es handelt sich um eine Geheimsprache:

Shelta is a secret language. Travellers do not like to share the language with outsiders, named „Buffers“, or non-travellers. When speaking Shelta in front of Buffers, Travellers will disguise the structure so as to make it seem like they aren't speaking Shelta at all.[3]

Eine geheime Sprache von Reisenden … wow, das ist doch mal eine gute Idee. Und gute Ideen führen dazu, dass man sie weiter ausspinnt und benutzt. So gibt es auch einen Fantasy-Bezug, nämlich zu den „Amber“-Romanen von Roger Zelazny:

Zelazny wrote that the language spoken in Amber is called „Thari“. This likely is a reference to the secret language of the Irish Travellers (…), known sometimes as „Shelta Thari“. (…) The mythology of Amber is syncretic fantasy, but often draws on Celtic roots -- thus he chose this as the universal mother tongue.[4]

Wieder was gelernt.
